What are catheters? Why do people need to use them?

A urinary catheter consists of a tube and a bag. The tube is inserted into a person’s bladder and the bag collects the waste that comes from the bladder. People use urinary catheters to help them manage their urination, especially when they don’t have much control over it due to disease or injury.

While some learners may be aware of catheters, this module goes into detail about what they involve and how they work. To do so, the module covers the anatomy and physiology related to catheters and shows how these may be impacted, hence the need for catheters.
